Neck pain is one of the most common reasons people visit a pain clinic. In Pune, long hours at a laptop in IT parks like Hinjewadi, daily two-wheeler rides over uneven roads and phones held at eye level for hours all add strain to the neck. The good news is that most neck pain gets better without surgery, often with simple changes you can start today.

This guide explains how to get rid of neck pain at home, which exercises help, the warning signs you should not ignore, and the non-surgical treatments available at our clinic in Wakad when home care is not enough.

Why Does Neck Pain Happen?

Your neck supports the weight of your head and moves many times a day. Pain usually starts when muscles, ligaments, joints, discs or nerves in the neck are overloaded. The most common causes are:

  • Muscle strain and poor posture: looking down at a phone or laptop for long periods ("tech neck") keeps the neck muscles working all day.
  • Neck sprain: a sudden jerk, such as braking hard on a two-wheeler or a minor road accident, can stretch the ligaments.
  • Muscle knots (trigger points): tight, tender spots in the neck and upper shoulder muscles, often linked to stress. Read more about myofascial pain in the neck.
  • Disc problems: a bulging or slipped disc can press on a nerve and cause pain that travels into the shoulder or arm. See disc problems of the neck.
  • Facet joint pain and cervical spondylosis: age-related wear of the small joints at the back of the neck. Learn about cervical facet joint syndrome.
  • Sleeping position: a pillow that is too high or too flat, or sleeping on your stomach.

How to Get Rid of Neck Pain at Home

Most neck pain only lasts a few weeks. For everyday neck pain or a mild neck sprain without warning signs, these steps can help you recover faster:

1. Keep your neck gently moving

It is better to keep your neck moving than to rest it completely. Do not wear a neck collar unless a doctor has told you to. Move your neck slowly within a comfortable range several times a day, and carry on with normal light activities.

2. Use heat or cold

Try a cold pack (such as frozen peas wrapped in a towel) for about 5 minutes, 3 times a day, or a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel for up to 20 minutes, 2 to 3 times a day. Use whichever feels better.

3. Fix your screen and desk set-up

Raise your laptop or monitor so the top of the screen is at eye level, keep your back supported, and take a short movement break every 30 to 45 minutes. Hold your phone higher instead of bending your head down to it.

4. Choose the right pillow

Use a low, firm pillow that keeps your head in line with your spine. Back and side sleeping are usually most comfortable. Try to avoid sleeping on your stomach.

5. Take care on the road

On a two-wheeler, sit upright, keep your arms relaxed and take breaks on long rides. A properly fitted helmet that does not tip your head forward also reduces strain.

6. Manage stress and sleep

Stress tightens the neck and shoulder muscles and makes pain feel worse. Regular sleep, breathing exercises and gentle yoga can help. Read more on how stress and anxiety intensify physical pain.

7. Use pain medicines carefully

Paracetamol or ibuprofen tablets, or ibuprofen gel rubbed on the neck, can ease pain for a few days. Check with a doctor or pharmacist first, especially if you have stomach, kidney or heart problems, are pregnant, or take other medicines. If painkillers are not working, see a doctor rather than continuing them for weeks.

Simple Exercises for Neck Pain Relief

These gentle exercises are safe for most people with everyday neck pain. Move slowly, stop if any exercise causes sharp pain, numbness or tingling, and repeat 5 to 10 times, two or three times a day:

  • Chin tucks: sit tall and gently draw your chin straight back, as if making a double chin. Hold for 5 seconds.
  • Shoulder blade squeeze: squeeze your shoulder blades together and down. Hold for 5 seconds.
  • Side bend stretch: slowly tilt your ear towards your shoulder until you feel a gentle stretch. Hold for 15 to 20 seconds on each side.
  • Neck rotation: slowly turn your head to look over one shoulder, then the other.
  • Shoulder rolls: roll your shoulders backwards in slow circles.

If the pain is not improving after a few weeks, a physiotherapist can check your posture and give you an exercise plan suited to your neck. Jeevisha has an in-house physiotherapy team in Wakad.

Neck pain not settling with home care?

Get your neck examined by a pain specialist at Jeevisha Pain Management Center, Kalewadi Phata, Wakad. We will find the cause and suggest a treatment plan without surgery wherever possible.

Warning Signs: When to See a Doctor

Most neck pain is not serious. However, see a doctor promptly if your neck pain:

  • is very painful or intense
  • spreads into your arms or legs
  • comes with numbness, tingling, pins and needles or weakness in the arms or hands
  • comes with a headache
  • has not improved after a few weeks, or painkillers have not helped

Get emergency care for severe neck pain after an injury such as a road accident or fall, or if you have a stiff neck with a very high temperature, numbness or weakness in the body or face, confusion, or a sudden, extremely painful headache.

Non-Surgical Treatments for Neck Pain

When home care is not enough, a pain specialist first finds the exact source of the pain through an examination and, only when needed, an X-ray or MRI. Treatment is then matched to the cause. At Jeevisha, non-surgical options include:

Physiotherapy and posture correction

A structured programme of stretching, strengthening and posture training is the foundation of long-term relief for most neck problems, along with ergonomic advice for work and home.

Trigger point treatment

For painful muscle knots that do not settle with exercises, targeted treatment of the trigger points can relax the muscle and break the pain cycle.

Cervical epidural injection

When a disc is irritating a nerve and causing pain down the arm, an image-guided cervical epidural injection places medicine close to the inflamed nerve to reduce swelling and pain.

Facet joint injection and radiofrequency ablation

If the small facet joints of the neck are the source of pain, an image-guided injection can confirm this and relieve pain. For longer-lasting relief, radiofrequency ablation calms the small nerves that carry pain signals from these joints.

Ultrasound-guided nerve hydrodissection

For a nerve trapped by surrounding tissue, ultrasound-guided hydrodissection uses fluid to gently free the nerve.

These are minimally invasive procedures, and injections are guided by X-ray (fluoroscopy) or ultrasound where needed. Your doctor will explain whether a procedure suits you, along with its benefits and risks. You can read more about our approach to neck pain treatment in Wakad, Pimpri-Chinchwad.

When Is Surgery Needed for Neck Pain?

Surgery is needed only in a small number of cases. These usually involve pressure on the spinal cord, nerve weakness that is getting worse, instability after an injury, or pain that has not responded to a full course of non-surgical care. Even then, the decision is made after careful assessment, and a second opinion from a pain specialist can help you understand every option first.

Related Problems: Headaches and Shoulder Pain

Neck problems often affect nearby areas. Tight upper neck muscles and joints can cause a cervicogenic headache at the back of the head. Neck and shoulder pain also often occur together. Read how to fix shoulder pain without surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I get rid of neck pain fast?

For a simple neck strain, keep the neck gently moving, use a cold or warm pack, take paracetamol or ibuprofen if they are suitable for you, sleep on a low, firm pillow and take short breaks from screens. Pain that is severe, follows an accident or fall, or comes with arm numbness, tingling or weakness should be checked by a doctor.

How long does neck pain take to heal?

Most neck pain only lasts a few weeks. If your neck pain has not improved after a few weeks, keeps coming back, or is getting worse, see a doctor or pain specialist to find the exact cause.

Which doctor should I consult for neck pain in Pune?

Start with a pain management specialist or your family doctor. A pain specialist can examine the neck, order an X-ray or MRI only if needed, and offer physiotherapy and image-guided non-surgical treatments. You can consult Dr. Sanjog Mekewar at Jeevisha Pain Management Center, Kalewadi Phata, Wakad.

Can a wrong pillow or sleeping position cause neck pain?

It can. A pillow that is too high or too soft can keep the neck bent for hours. A low, firm pillow that keeps your head in line with your spine is usually best. Sleeping on your stomach twists the neck and can make pain worse.

Can cervical spondylosis be treated without surgery?

In most people, yes. Cervical spondylosis is age-related wear of the neck joints and discs. Pain is usually managed with exercises, posture changes, medicines and, when needed, image-guided injections or radiofrequency ablation. Surgery is considered mainly when nerves or the spinal cord are being compressed and symptoms are worsening.

Can neck pain cause headaches?

Yes. Tight neck muscles and irritated joints in the upper neck can cause a cervicogenic headache, which usually starts at the back of the head on one side. Treating the neck problem often relieves the headache too.
