Intradiscal PRP MIPSI

MIPSI or Minimally invasive pain and spine interventions is a broad term which encompasses all the Non-invasive and minimally invasive interventions done by the interventional spine and pain physicians for myriad of conditions right from Musculo-skeletal disorders like back pain, neck pain, knee pain etc.

What is Intradiscal PRP therapy?

Intervertebral disc is made up of two components: inner Nucleus pulposus and an outer tuff layer of Annulus fibrosus.

Intervertebral disc degeneration is characterized by dehydration of the disc, development of annular tears and the process of neuratization around tears(formation of abnormal painful nerves).

As disc gets its nutrition by diffusion from outside in, healing process is often slow at the disc level.

Platelet rich plasma is rich in growth factors which potentiates the healing process at the tissue level when injected at the targeted painful areas.

Intradiscal PRP therapy is the Regenerative procedure which involves injection of Platelet rich plasma inside the degenerated discs to potentiate healing at the disc level and thus treating the actual pathology.

Indications:

  • Discogenic pain
  • Intervertebral disc degeneration
  • Annular tears
  • Disc buldge

How Intradiscal PRP therapy helps relief pain?

The basic problem which underlies these painful conditions is the ineffective healing process at the disc. Regenerative medicine is a well recognized Non invasive treatment method which stimulates the natural healing process of the body and potentiates regeneration of the damaged tissues . This process occurs due to the release of various growth factors[ Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1), Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF), Platelet-Derived Growth Factor (PDGF), Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF)] at the site of injection which initially produce controlled aseptic inflammation followed by the regeneration of the cells and collagen tissues.

A few sessions of Regenerative therapy helps avoid a potential surgery and helps to get back to the routine life at the earliest

When will the medication begin to work?

Patient can start appreciating the effect of the medications over a period of 3-4 weeks.

How many times this procedure has to be repeated?

Most patients need only one injection, however, some patients may need repetition of the procedure. Decision to repeat the procedure is taken by your doctor looking at your MRI and the relief percentage from previous procedure.

Will I require hospitalization for this procedure?

No. This is a Day care procedure. Patient is advised about the Pre-procedure precautions before- hand. On the day of the procedure, patient arrives 2 hours before the procedure and is discharged same day after 2 hours of monitoring.
