Bursitis

Bursae are fluid filled sacs present around the joint which facilitate movement and reduce friction at tendon-tendon and tendon-bone interfaces. There are five main bursae around the shoulder. They include
- Subacromial-subdeltoid (SASD) bursa
- Subscapular recess
- Subcoracoid bursa
- Coracoclavicular bursa
- Supra-acromial bursa
Bursitis is inflammation of these bursae . Most common bursae to get inflamed are the SASD bursa and the subcoracoid bursa.
Signs and Symptoms
- Shoulder pain which is sharp in character
- Painful range of motion of the joint
- Local tenderness over the shoulder joint which may/ may not be associated with swelling
- Night pain which often disturbs the sleep of the patient and inability to sleep on the affected shoulder
- Impingement sign may be positive
Risk Factors
- Work involving repetitive movements of the shoulder joint
- Primary shoulder injury leading to bursitis
- Excessive pressure or loading on the joint
- Metabolic conditions like Diabetes mellitis
- Autoimmune conditions like Rheumatoid arthritis and Systemic lupus erythematosus
