Bursitis : Signs, Symptoms and Treatment

Bursitis

Bursae are fluid filled sacs present around the joint which facilitate movement and reduce friction at tendon-tendon and tendon-bone interfaces. There are five main bursae around the shoulder. They include

  • Subacromial-subdeltoid (SASD) bursa
  • Subscapular recess
  • Subcoracoid bursa
  • Coracoclavicular bursa
  • Supra-acromial bursa

Bursitis is inflammation of these bursae . Most common bursae to get inflamed are the SASD bursa and the subcoracoid bursa.

Signs and Symptoms


  • Shoulder pain which is sharp in character
  • Painful range of motion of the joint
  • Local tenderness over the shoulder joint which may/ may not be associated with swelling
  • Night pain which often disturbs the sleep of the patient and inability to sleep on the affected shoulder
  • Impingement sign may be positive

Risk Factors


  • Work involving repetitive movements of the shoulder joint
  • Primary shoulder injury leading to bursitis
  • Excessive pressure or loading on the joint
  • Metabolic conditions like Diabetes mellitis
  • Autoimmune conditions like Rheumatoid arthritis and Systemic lupus erythematosus
