Calcific Tendinitis

The term “Calcific Tendinitis” simply means: Calcific – Calcium deposits and Tendinitis – Irritation or Inflammation of the tendon where the deposits accumulate.
It is a disorder characterized by deposits of, naturally occurring minerals in the body, hydroxyapatite (a crystalline calcium phosphate) in the tendons of the rotator cuff (shoulder), causing pain and inflammation. It is a result of previous injury to the tendons which during the process of healing leads to development of these calcium deposits.
Signs and Symptoms
- Pain during movements, specially, overhead abduction of arm
- Positive signs of Impingement if deposits in the Supraspinatus tendon
- Night pain due to associated component of the tendinitis
- Limited range of motion due to the component of pain
JEEVISHA protocol for management of Calcific tendinitis:
- Medications: In the initial course of the management of this condition, patients may be prescribed some anti-inflammatories to reduce the inflammation. Some other medications may be prescribed depending on the condition of the patient, which is individualized from patient to patient basis.
- Physiotherapy: Physiotherapy plays a very important role in fighting these painful conditions. With a team of dedicated physiotherapist, patient is further evaluated and accordingly a plan is prepared for first reducing pain with different modalities and then slowly rehabilitating shoulder for normal functioning.
Targeted treatment
- Ultrasound guided saline Barbotage of the calcific deposits
- Ultrasound guided Platelet rich plasma injections
- Ultrasound guided Prolotherapy
