Myofascial Pain syndrome

Muscular pain is one of the commonest causes for Acute back pain and most of the times it gets resolved with some rest and basic pain killers. However, if pain persists for more than 3 months then it is called as Chronic Myofascial syndrome.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Continuous or intermittent Dull aching type of pain in the back
  • Aggravation of pain on prolonged sitting or standing. Commonly seen in people who have sitting jobs.
  • Feeling of knots or bands in the muscle
  • Relieved by taking adequate rest or doing periodic stretching

Risk Factors

  • Prolonged sitting job
  • Abnormal posture while working
  • Overuse of muscles due to repetitive use of the same muscle.
  • Inadequate diet or water intake
  • Stress induced

  • Dry needling: It is a procedure that involves the insertion of fine, short stainless steel needles (25-gauge or thinner) into the skin and muscle at trigger points or painful areas in the muscles. Either done blindly or under Ultrasound guidance, it helps to release the taut bands in the muscles causing the pain.
  • Trigger point injections: Some patients may require injection of medications in the trigger points because of associated inflammation in the area. Trigger point injections are done under Ultrasound guidance as a day care procedure.
